How to register as a seller on GeM

What you need, the steps on the portal and the mistakes that cause most delays.

GeM (Government e-Marketplace) is the online platform where government departments, PSUs and other public buyers purchase goods and services. Any business that wants to sell to these buyers on GeM needs a seller account.

Registration on GeM is free on the official portal. Be careful of anyone asking for a "GeM registration fee" as if it were a government charge.

Who can register

Proprietorships, partnership firms, LLPs, companies, societies and other entities can register, as manufacturers, resellers or service providers. Individuals register through the business they represent.

Keep these ready

  • PAN of the business and of the authorised person
  • Aadhaar of the authorised person, with the mobile number linked to it
  • GST certificate, where your business is registered under GST
  • Udyam certificate, if you are an MSME (recommended)
  • Bank account details and a cancelled cheque
  • Recent ITR and address proof of the business

The steps

  1. Create the account. Sign up as a seller and verify the authorised person with Aadhaar or PAN based verification.
  2. Business details. Enter the organisation type, PAN and details exactly as they appear on official records.
  3. Verifications. Complete PAN, GST, address and bank account verification on the portal.
  4. Profile. Add office and factory addresses, tax details and contact persons.
  5. Vendor assessment, if required. Some product categories require a vendor assessment before you can list. Check this for your category.
  6. Catalogue. Add your products or services so buyers can find you.

Mistakes that cause delays

  • Business name spelt differently across PAN, GST and bank records
  • Aadhaar not linked to an active mobile number
  • Choosing the wrong organisation type
  • Registering without checking whether your products have a matching GeM category

After registration

Registration only opens the door. Orders come from a complete catalogue, competitive pricing and regular participation in bids. GeM applies its own charges, such as transaction charges on larger orders, under its current terms. Read them on the portal before you quote.

Rules and screens on GeM change from time to time. Always confirm the latest process on gem.gov.in.
